In the very beginning, I was destined for a career in speech-language pathology before I had a clue what this field was about. In my early years, my brother and I were inseparable. Unfortunately, he presented with a speech delay between the ages of 2-3 years old. My parents were usually frustrated with his "baby talk" at that age and would rely on me for translation with this mysterious language he would passionately express. I had this magic ability to somehow always know what he wanted to say. This continued for a short while until he was evaluated and treated by a speech-language therapist.
However, it would be years to come before I decide to take that first leap into learning about this profession. Initially, I majored in biology at Long Island University and I enjoyed my classes. Though, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. To shake up my routine, I decided to take a voice and diction class and found it wonderfully refreshing! I shared my experience with my mother who worked as an educator, and she suggested that I explore a career as a speech-language therapist. It seemed only natural to take the next step which was observing a therapy session. I was instantly hooked! I made the decision at that point to pursue a career in this field. I love the fact that you can combine the clinical aspect of improving communication disorders with fun and creative activities to help children. Besides, I'm a kid at heart after all!
This major decision impacted me for years to come as I gained valuable experience working with children in the early intervention program (birth-3 years old), preschool (ages 3-4), and the school aged level (grades K-12). I have even had the pleasure of helping college students who struggled with written language skills and reading comprehension overcome their challenges for academic success. I'm currently servicing students at the middle school level. I love this age group because they are learning independence and starting to take accountability for their education. While working with middle school students, I fulfilled the role of DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) Coordinator and Peer Mediation Advisor. It's been equally rewarding for me to help children practice advocating for themselves and resolve interpersonal conflicts.
I've always been inspired to help people and start my own business. However, on September 6th, 2020 my brother and best friend passed away reminding me that life is too short. Although I miss him dearly, this event in my life was the final spark of motivation I needed to create my online business Nicole's Speech & Language Consultations, LLC.
